SIAM Brochure Profiles Careers in Mathematics Outside Academia

December 4, 2008

Hoping to spur interest in the study of real-world mathematics, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has published a new edition of its brochure "Careers in Math."

Updated from the 2003 edition, this 20-page publication has inside information for high school and college students about emerging fields needing young people with mathematics backgrounds; gives examples of companies, organizations, and institutions that often hired applied mathematicians and computational scientists; and profiles professionals working at Google, IBM, Merck, Michelin, the National Security Agency, and elsewhere.

The brochure addresses questions such as: What's out there for someone with my interests and background? Where can I work? Where are the up-and-coming job opportunities? How should I pursue my studies? Who are the people working in industry today?

Interested students can view the brochure online or obtain a print copy from SIAM. Math career information is also available from the MAA and the American Mathematical Society. The Sloan Career Cornerstone Center, to which the MAA contributed, offers career planning resources.
