Spoiler Alert: Statistical Model Predicts Game of Thrones Deaths

Statistics lecturer Richard Vale (University of Canterbury in New Zealand) created a statistical model that predicts what will happen—who, specifically, will die—in the next two Game of Thrones novels.

In all of the novels, each chapter is told from the point of view of one of 24 characters. What Vale's model predicts is the likelihood of a character having his or her own chapter in each book. An extremely low likelihood of a character having a chapter hints that he or she will be killed off.

“A lot of people are inspired to make fan art by drawing their favourite characters or scenes from the books,” Vale says. “As a mathematician/statistician, this mathematical model is my version of fan art.”
