Team USA Brings Home Medals from EGMO

The results are in for the inaugural European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad held April 12-13, 2012, at Murray Edwards College.

Every member of Team USA brought home a medal. Danielle Wang and Victoria Xia were awarded gold medals. Wang tied for the top score and Xia tied for third place. Sarah Hermann and Julia Huang won bronze medals.

Team USA placed fourth in total team points behind Poland, Romania, and Ukraine. Full results are available here.

“The USA team was the only team to get two gold medals out of seven total awarded,” said Steven Dunbar, Director of the Mathematical Association of America’s American Mathematics Competitions. “Overall, this is an excellent result. It continues our streak of every Math Olympiad participant from the USA getting a medal.”

Inspired by the China Girls' Math Olympiad (CGMO), The European Girls’ Math Olympiad is similar in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), with two tests taken on consecutive days. Participating countries send teams consisting of their strongest four, high-school-age, female mathematicians.

Team USA for the 2012 EGMO included:

Victoria Xia, 15, a sophomore at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (Vienna, Virginia), has won the 2011 "Math Prize for Girls" Contest and  brought home a gold medal from the 2011 CGMO. In February, she represented the Mathematical Association of America at the White House Science Fair. She also participated in MAA's Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program and earned an Honorable Mention at the 2010 "Math Prize for Girls" competition.

Sarah Herrmann, 15, a junior at La Jolla High School (La Jolla, CA), won a bronze medal at the 2011 CGMO.

Julia Huang, 15, a sophomore at Lynbrook High School (Saratoga, CA), won a silver medal at the 2011 CGMO.

Danielle Wang, 14, a freshman at Westmont High School (Campbell, CA), brought home a gold medal from the 2011 CGMO.

Akamai Technologies, Inc., long time supporter of the American Mathematics Competitions, generously provided funding to send Team USA and their chaperon to England for the Olympiad.
