16th Annual Legacy of R. L. Moore IBL Conference

Brian Hopkins Begins Term as CMJ Editor-Elect

On January 1, Brian Hopkins of St. Peter's University in Jersey City, New Jersey, began his term as editor-elect of The College Mathematics JournalRead more. At the same time, Dave Richeson (Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania) began his term as editor-elect of Math Horizons.

 

AMC Results

The AMC 10 A and AMC 12 A, the year's first MAA math contests for high school students grades 10 and below and grades 12 and below, respectively, took place on Tuesday, February 5. Check the AMC webpage for results and statistics. The alternate AMC 10 B and AMC 12 B took place February 20. Results and statistics will be available as early as March 1.  

 

MAA Members' Advice Welcomed by StatsNSF

A recently-appointed StatsNSF committee is examining the structure of NSF's support of statistics, defined here as the science of planning, acquisition, management, analysis of, and inference from data. The StatsNSF committee is inviting input from members of disciplinary societies, including MAA. Read more.

The Mary P. Dolciani Award recognizes a pure or applied mathematician who is making a distinguished contribution to the mathematical education of K-16 students in the United States or Canada. Math Teachers' Circles Workshops

Math Teachers' Circles can be powerful vehicles for engaging middle school teachers in authentic mathematical experiences that will ultimately affect their understanding and teaching of mathematics. Applications are currently being accepted for two workshops: Washington, DC (June 17-21, 2013, at the MAA) and Palo Alto, CA (June 24-28, 2013, at the American Institute of Mathematics). Read more.

Century Mathematics

The Center for Curriculum Redesign is organizing 21st Century Mathematics: "What should students learn in the 21st Century?" in Stockholm, April 22-24. Michael Pearson and a number of prominent MAA members will be speaking at the event. This conference will discuss top-level changes in the math school curriculum, in terms of what topics and branches should be added, and just as crucially, what should be removed. More here.

Mathematics Magazine Editor Search

The MAA seeks to identify candidates to succeed Walter Stromquist as editor of Mathematics Magazine when his term expires in December 2014. Review of applicants will begin March 15, 2013, with appointment as editor-elect to commence on January 1, 2014. Read more here
