John Wallis appointed Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford University. This came as a surprise to many for the theologian's only previous accomplishment in mathematics was his skill at deciphering captured coded letters for Parliamentarians during the English Civil War. Within a few years he became one of the leading mathematicians of his time.
