William Watson born in Nantucket, Massachusetts. In 1862, he earned his Ph.D. at the University of Jena, Germany, being the first American to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics at a foreign university. Later he taught at Harvard and MIT. In the same year Yale was the first American school to grant a Ph.D. in mathematics.
