UNIVAC I unveiled. UNIVersal Automatic Computer I, the first commercial electronic computer, was demonstrated and dedicated at the U.S. Bureau of the Census at Philadelphia. It could accept information from magnetic tape at the rate of 10,000 characters per second, yet could retain a maximum of 1000 numbers.
