Team USA Earns Fourth Place in 2020 European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad

Washington, DC - Team USA earned fourth place in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), a challenging high school competition hosted annually to honor girls across the world who excel in mathematics. This year, the competition originally scheduled in the Netherlands was held virtually on April 15-21, 2020. In addition to the team’s placement, the following team members were also awarded for their individual performance:

Team USA

  • Sanjana Das, gold medal
  • Ashley Ke, silver medal​
  • Elizabeth Ke, silver medal
  • Christine Yang, silver medal

53 countries competed in the competition with 204 total student participants. Meghal Gupta served as the team leader and Rachel Zhang accompanied as the deputy leader for Team USA. The U.S. team, sponsored by MAA, won first place in 2017 and 2019.

The competition is made up of six proof-style problems given over two days. The U.S. team score was 105 out of a possible 168 points. Das tied for the second-highest scoring student competitor and received 36 points out of a possible 42.

"The MAA American Mathematics Competitions encourage all students, especially young women, to reach their full potential. We are honored to have such a dedicated team representing the USA this year, and we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors."
