Bourbaki Lives! His Archives Are Open

N. Bourbaki was not a real person. But the many French mathematicians who have collaborated under a name they picked out of the air have produced more than 40 books and 30 revisions since the 1930s. These anonymous, spirited mathematicians have produced a "fruitful source of concepts and references," said Jean-Paul Pier (University of Luxembourg).

Thompson and Tits Share 2008 Abel Prize

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has announced that John Griggs Thompson of the University of Florida and Jacques Tits of the Collège de France will share the 2008 Abel Prize. Academy President Ole Didrik Lærum noted that Thompson and Tits received the Abel Prize “for their profound achievements in algebra and in particular for shaping modern group theory.”

That‘s the question those eye-grabbing orange posters you’ve probably noticed around collegiate math departments are asking.  It’s the theme of this year Mathematics Awareness Month and a fitting one at that. With the ongoing primaries and caucuses, and upcoming presidential election on everybody’s mind, 2008 makes the perfect year to display the elegant connection between math and voting.

Putnam Competition Results: Harvard Captures Top Prize

For the eighth time in the last 14 years, Harvard has won the William Lowell Putnam Competition and the $25,000 prize for its mathematics department.

Harvard’s winning team of Tiankai Liu, Alison Miller, and Zachary Abel will each receive $1,000 for their efforts. The teams from Princeton, MIT, Stanford, and Duke rounded out the top five.
