2007 Sliffe Teaching Awards: Honoring High School Math Coaches

The Sliffe Awards for distinguished mathematics teaching at the high school level are given annually to teachers deemed most responsible for their students' success on the AMC 12. These awards are the result of a bequest made to the MAA by Edyth May Sliffe, a retired high school teacher of mathematics in Emeryville, Calif. The award recipients are selected from nominations received from the three students of each of the 60 highest scoring teams on the AMC 12.

The 2007 recipients are:

USA Mathematical Olympiad: Filming $${\it Hard}$$ $${\it Problems}$$

On the evening of May 21, attendees at the awards ceremony honoring this year's U.S.A. Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) winners got a special treat. Filmmaker George Paul Csicsery screened—to the delight of the USAMO winners and their parents, MAA officials, and invited guests—about 45 minutes of clips from his planned documentary about U.S. participation in the 2006 International Mathematical Olympiad.

USA Mathematical Olympiad: Awards Ceremony Honors 2007 Winners

Twelve outstanding high school students are winners of the prestigious 2007 USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO). They are the best of the more than 225,000 students who took part in a series of contests put together by the MAA's American Mathematics Competitions program, which culminated with the challenging USAMO exam.

Last evening, these students took part in a gala awards ceremony and dinner at the U.S. Department of State.

Former MAA President Deborah Tepper Haimo Has Died

Former MAA President Deborah Tepper Haimo died at the age of 85 in Claremont, Calif. on May 17, 2007. Professor Haimo served as MAA President from 1991-92. During her tenure as president she helped reorganize the MAA's committee structure, created the Franklin and Deborah Tepper Haimo award honoring outstanding teaching, and encouraged the participation of women in mathematics at every level and in the MAA.

Former MAA Executive Director "A.B." Willcox Has Died


Former MAA Executive Director Alfred B. Willcox has died at age 81 of complications of pneumonia.  There will be a memorial service at Ashlar Village, in Wallingford, Conn., on June 1, 2007, at 10:00 a.m.
