WINNERS OF THE 1999 USA MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD

Lincoln (NE), May 11, 1999

The winners of the 1999 United States of America Mathematical Olympiad
(USAMO) held on April 27, 1999 are as follows:

Reid W. Barton - Arlington, MA
Gabriel D. Carroll - Oakland, CA
Lawrence O. Detlor - New York, NY
Stephen E. Haas - Sunnyvale, CA
Po-Shen Loh - Madison, WI
Alexander B. Schwartz - Bryn Mawr, PA
Paul A. Valiant - Belmont, MA
Melanie E. Wood - Indianapolis, IN

The winners will be honored during award ceremonies to be held in
Washington, DC on June 6-8, 1999.

These eight top high school mathematics students along with 16 other
young students from across the nation have been invited to attend a four week
Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP), to be held at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln, June 9 - July 8, 1999. The MOSP is a mathematics program
for very promising students who have risen to the top on contests.
It broadens students' view of mathematics and better prepares them for
possible participation in our International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) team.
The program also provides a superior example of the way mathematics
instruction should be carried out.

The six students who will compete as the USA Team in the 40th Annual
International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), to be held in Bucharest, Romania,
on July 10-22 are: Barton, Carroll, Detlor, Loh, Valiant and Wood.
Four of these students were on last year's team which ranked 3rd among the
76 competing countries. The Head Coach of the USA Team, Titu Andreescu,
expects an even better finish this year!
