## Sample Research Problems from Industry

## Sample Student PIC Math Presentations

The PIC Math research team recorded oral presentations are intended to take the place of a live presentation of the research to another professional. This presentation should be no more than 12 minutes long. Below are links to some PIC Math research presentations from the first PIC Math cohort of academic year 2014/15.

## Preparing Your PIC Math Recorded Video Presentations

- The video should not exceed 12 minutes.
- Zoom is a fine platform for students in different locations to record these videos, but students are welcome to choose any effective software.
- Ideally, each student on the team should present some slides.
- We would like to see and hear each student speak, if at all possible.
- Students should be dressed in business casual attire, if possible, as they would when giving a presentation at a company or at a meeting.
- Unlike in other years, students are free to post-process their videos!
- The presentation should:
- Include the MAA and PIC Math logo on the title slide and say that this work is part of the PIC Math (pronounced “pick math”) program
- Begin your video presentation with an introduction, clearly stating your group as an MAA PIC Math team, the industry partner of the project, the primary function of that organization, and the industry liaison(s) name and role(s) at the organization.
*Example:* We are an MAA PIC Math team from Anytown University and worked with Math R Us Industries, which works to ensure mathematics is successfully implemented in everyday systems. Our industry liaisons at Math R US were the Vice President of Programming, John Doe and Director of Operations, Jane Smith.
- Proceed in the following sequence for this industrial math presentation:
- Give a statement of the problem and tell why the problem is important
- Brief statement of your results
- Details about your approach to the problem
- More detailed presentation of your results
- Restatement of the problem and the results
- Suggested future work
- Acknowledgement Slide

- PIC Math is a program of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Support is provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF grant DMS-1722275).
- Name(s) of faculty advisor(s), name of industry partner organization, name(s) of industry liaisons, etc.
- "Bonus footage" - this is not counted in the 12-minutes of the video report.
- Reflection - describe a useful, relevant or new skill, attitude, concept, or experience that you learned from working on this project that you may not have discussed in your project report.

## Preparing Your PIC Math Written Report

- The written report should not be longer than 12 pages.
- Note: The 12-page limit refers to the main body of the report. The references and appendices are considered separate parts and are not counted in the 12-page limit.

- The paper should look professional and should follow this structure:
- Give a statement of the industrial problem, its context, and tell why the problem is important.
- Make sure that the industry partner of the project, the primary function of that organization, and the industry liaison(s) name and role(s) at the organization are stated clearly.
- Give results.
- Give the details about the problem approach, and make sure to include in your discussiona clear statement about your assumptions.
- Give a more detailed presentation of the results (items 4 and 5 are where more mathematics and statistics details will go).
- Describe the possible limitations of your solution.
- Conclusion with implications and suggestions for future work

### Note About Submitted Materials

The MAA, PIC Math leadership, and PIC Math reviewers will be the only ones who will have access to the submitted materials (videos, reports, etc.). MAA may select certain videos to post publicly but would ask for permission before doing so.
