W. J. G. Karsten (1732-1787) was a German mathematician and academic. In 1760, he published the comprehensive Mathesis Theoretica Elementaris atque Sublimior (Elementary and Higher Theoretical Mathematics), probably as a textbook for his students.

On page 807 of this text, Karsten discussed the concept of integration.
