Dates of Program: May 15 - June 30, 2012
Summary: The main content of this project is knot theory. The faculty mentors will lead the students in investigating the interaction between knot theory and knotted structures in biology, particularly DNA. Other related problems about invariants of links in S3 will also be considered. These problems will be coupled with the visualization by computer algebra system. Through this project, the students will gain experience of conducting original research which will lead them to success in their future graduate research work. At the conclusion of the project, each student will produce two or three short internal resports and be ready for external conference presentations. In addition to research, students will gain experience in mathematics typesetting using LATEX and mathematical computing and animation using MATLAB and Mathematica.
