About the Author

Philip Straffin received his B.A. magna cum laude from Harvard in 1965, studied at Cambridge (Marshall Scholarship), where he performed with distinction on the Tripos exams, and received his Ph.D. from Berkeley in 1971. His mathematical versatility is reflected in the range of his publications: on algebraic topology, dynamical systems, mathematical modeling, game theory, and the theory of voting. He was a professor of mathematics for 37 years at Beloit College (1970-2007), and chaired the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciece from 1980 to 1990. He is currently retired, living in Colorado with his wife.
