Ernst Zermelo: An Approach to His Life and Work
The Basic Library List Committee suggests that undergraduate mathematics libraries consider this book for acquisition.
See our review of the first edition.
The second edition benefits from Ebbighaus's work on Zermelo's Collected Works (see our reviews of volume 1 and volume 2), which include expert commentaries on Zermelo's mathematics. The process of putting together the two volumes therefore gave Ebbinghaus many opportunities to read and discuss the papers. The second edition displays the resulting deeper understanding.
The system of citations has been adapted to that of the Collected Works to facilitate cross-referencing. In addition, the author has found some new information, allowing him to correct and expand the biography, which continues to be a valuable resource.
