This volume is a collection of papers by researchers associated with the SINTEF research institute and surrounding universities in Oslo, Norway. The volume is loosely organized into a section of papers on computer aided geometric design, a section on numerical simulation of PDEs, and a section on applications of optimization in operations research, particularly vehicle routing problems.

Within each of the three sections the topics are quite diverse. For example, the section on computer aided geometric design includes both a tutorial on the use of graphics processing units for general purpose computing and and a survey of algorithms for computing the intersections of surfaces. The wide range of topics demonstrates the breadth of research in applied and computational mathematics at SINTEF. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that any one reader will be interested in more than one of the three sections.

Brian Borchers is a professor of Mathematics at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. His interests are in optimization and applications of optimization in parameter estimation and inverse problems.
