This book of ICME-13 monographs features papers about mathematics values of teachers and/or students from varying countries and backgrounds, such as Japan, Turkey, China, Germany, Australia, and Ghana. Many of the papers included in the book are based on the work of Alan Bishop, a well-known mathematics educator who studies the relevance of culture in mathematics and how it relates back to his six mathematical values of rationalism, objectivism, control, progress, openness, and mystery.

Chapter 1 provides a nice introduction into the purpose and organization of the book to help orientate the reader into the structure of the book. Chapter 2 includes a valuable look into Alan Bishop’s mathematical ideals through an in-depth interview of the renowned mathematics educator. The remaining 13 chapters detail studies in various countries about the value of mathematics by students and/or teachers.

This book is an informative read for anyone who wants to learn more about the valuable work of Alan Bishop and how it has influenced other mathematics educators around the world.
Ann Wheeler is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX.
