Annual Meeting of HPM Americas Section


The annual meeting of the HPM Americas Section will take place Friday, April 28 at 5:30 pm. in the Landmark 5 room of the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis. The meeting will feature two talks:

Alexander Karp of Columbia University will speak on the history of mathematics high school exams in Russia from the late 1860s through the 1950s. These high stakes exams, interesting in their own right, and the social contexts in which they took place, are make this a fascinating topic.

Charles Ford of St. Louis University will speak about Moscow Mathematics and a Religious Renaissance. He will discuss the intimate links between mathematical and religious thought among leading Russian mathematicians in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

After the formal meeting, there will be additional opportunities for discussion over dinner at a nearby restaurant.
