Mathematical Treasure: 15th Century Manuscript from Islamic Spain

Abu Abd al-Rahman Ya’qub ibn Ayyub (fl. 1350-1387) was an Islamic mathematician. The following images are from a 1445 manuscript originating in Granada, Spain, republishing his commentary on mathematical operations involving fractions and square roots. Numerical calculation is highlighted in red ink.

The images above were obtained through the courtesy of the Lawrence J. Schoenberg Collection, University of Pennsylvania Library, where it has reference number LJS 464.
