Mathematical Treasure: Arithmetic for Merchants and Traders

Author(s):
Frank J. Swetz (The Pennsylvania State University)

Little is known of the Spanish writer Francisco Ochoa de Samaniego except that he left us the arithmetic book, Arismetica guarisma, published in 1644. The title page specifies that it was written for the use of those who conducted commerce and trade in Asia, Africa, and Europe. The text is comprised of four books: the first deals with arithmetic; the second, banking; the third, monetary exchange; and the fourth, specific needs of merchants.
