Mathematical Treasure: De Morgan's Elements of Arithmetic

Author(s):
Frank J. Swetz (The Pennsylvania State University)

Among Augustus De Morgan’s many works was The Elements of Arithmetic. First published in 1830, the work went through many editions. Here are excerpts from the fifth edition of 1858.

In his preface, De Morgan noted the need to teach arithmetic “by reason and demonstration.”

The rather new technique of finding the roots of an equation by “Horner’s Method” is discussed on pages 210-212.
