Mathematical Treasure: God, the Supreme Geometer

In the Middle Ages, the universe was viewed as a great machine whose creation and functioning reflected harmony: proportion and symmetry, these qualities were imparted through design by its Creator. Scholars of this period conceived their Christian God as a Great Geometer whose compass served as the “tool of creation.” This 13^th century illumination, the frontispiece of the French Bible Moralisée, depicts this belief.
