Mathematical Treasure: Houel on Quaternion Theory

Jules Hoüel (1823–1886) was a French mathematician whose major work was a four-volume study of complex variables, Théorie élémentaire des quantités complexes (1867, 1868, 1871 and 1874). Hoüel was also active in the introduction of foreign mathematical works into France, and in 1874 he published Eléments de la théorie des quaternions:
