Mathematical Treasure: Hutton’s Tracts on Applied Mathematics

Author(s):
Frank J. Swetz (The Pennsylvania State University)

Charles Hutton (1737-1823) was an English mathematician and a leading mathematics educator of his time. As Professor of Mathematics at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, he set curriculum, wrote textbooks, and, at one time, edited the Ladies’ Diary. He was also active in applied mathematics, as the existence of these Tracts indicates.

Hutton’s portrait appeared on the frontispiece.

This material was obtained through the courtesy of the Peabody Library of Johns Hopkins University.
