Mathematical Treasure: J. J. Sylvester's Collected Papers

James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897) was a versatile English mathematician whose career was hindered by anti-Semitism. Today, he is primarily remembered for his work in matrix theory. During a stay in the United States, he contributed to the development of mathematics here, serving both as inaugural Professor of Mathematics at Johns Hopkins University and founder of the American Journal of Mathematics. Returning to England he finished his career at Oxford. His Collected Mathematical Papers were published in four volumes (1904-1912), compiled by Henry F. Baker, a mathematician at Cambridge University. The images shown here are from the first volume (1904).
