Author(s):
Frank J. Swetz (Pennsylvania State University)

James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897) was a versatile English mathematician whose career was hindered by anti-Semitism. Today, he is primarily remembered for his work in matrix theory. During a stay in the United States, he contributed to the development of mathematics here, serving both as inaugural Professor of Mathematics at Johns Hopkins University and founder of the American Journal of Mathematics. Returning to England he finished his career at Oxford. His Collected Mathematical Papers were published in four volumes (1904-1912), compiled by Henry F. Baker, a mathematician at Cambridge University. The images shown here are from the first volume (1904).

The “Table of Contents” of this first volume lists Sylvester’s publications from 1837-1853:

The complete work can be viewed on the Internet Archive, where its source is given as the University of California Libraries.
