Li Zhizao (1565–1630) was a Chinese mathematician and astronomer. He worked closely with the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci (1552–1610) in bringing western knowledge into his kingdom. In 1605, he prepared a preface for a translation of Christopher Clavius’ Astrolabium into the Chinese language, which was completed as Hun gai tong xian tu shuo (Illustrated Explanation of the Sphere and Astrolabe) in 1607.
