Mathematical Treasure: Liouville's Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics

Joseph Liouville (1809-1882) was a French mathematician who taught at the École Polytechnique, the École Centrale, and the Collège de France. He was a versatile mathematician and had his name associated with several mathematical concepts. In 1836, he founded the Journal de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées and remained its editor for many years. This journal became very influential, becoming the forum for the French mathematical community.

A reader knowledgeable in French would benefit greatly in reviewing available issues of this work made accessible on the Internet Archive by the University of Ottawa. The title page and table of contents from the second volume of series 3, published in 1876, are shown below:

The first volume of series 9, published in 1922, contained a photograph and obituary of Camille Jordan.
