Mathematical Treasure: Liouville's Journal

Journal de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées is the second oldest, continually published mathematical journal in the world. Founded by the French mathematician Joseph Liouville (1809-1882) and published in Paris since 1836, its influence did much to stimulate the climate of French mathematics in the 19th century. The following images are of the first edition.

Liouville served as the first editor and was a major contributor to the inaugural issue of the journal. The “Table of Contents” indicates mathematical activities of this period.
