Mathematical Treasure: Newton's Fluxions Owned by De Morgan

Author(s):
Frank J. Swetz (The Pennsylvania State University)

This is the cover of the first edition of Isaac Newton’s Method of Fluxions translated into French by the Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) and published as La Methode des Fluxions et des Suites Infinies in 1740. As the signed, handwritten note on the cover explains, the mathematician Augustus De Morgan (1806-1871) first came across the book in May of 1852 and added it to his collection of historically significant mathematics texts. The De Morgan Collection is now housed at the Senate Library, London.
