Todhunter’s History of Calculus of Variations

Isaac Todhunter (1820-1884) was a British mathematician, teacher and textbook writer. He was also noted for his writings on the history of mathematics. His text, A History of the Progress of the Calculus of Variations During the Nineteenth Century (1861), provides valuable insight into the mathematical research of the period.

The “Preface” supplies a brief outline of the main research concerning the calculus of variations.
