Where the Rivers Meet

This article is published in the February/March 2012 issue of MAA FOCUS.

Since the dedication of the MAA Carriage House and Conference Center in 2007, 401 commemorative bricks have been installed in the “river of bricks” located in the courtyard outside of the center.  The commemorative bricks provide essential support for the Conference Center and its activities while honoring friends and colleagues in the mathematical community.

The walk containing the bricks forms a map of the confluence of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers in the District of Columbia. The last installation completed the section where the Potomac and the Anacostia meet. The next installation will begin the Anacostia River section.

Each brick costs $303, a figure that honors the March 3 birthday of the late Paul Halmos, who with his wife, Virginia Halmos, provided funding for the restoration of the Carriage House.
