About MAA Undergraduate Student Travel Grants

The Mathematical Association of America, with funding from the National Science Foundation Division of Mathematical Sciences (grant DMS-1341843), offers a small number of supplemental student travel grants (STG) reimbursements, to select undergraduate students, and eligible high school and first-year graduate students. All undergraduates presenting posters or talks at annual meetings of the MAA (MathFest and the Joint Mathematics Meetings) are eligible for funding, subject to the availability of funds.

Each successful applicant will be informed in advance of the meeting as to the amount of his/her grant. The awarding of a travel grant is contingent upon making a presentation at the meeting and submission of original receipts for expenses. Students who accept travel support are expected to participate fully in all aspects of the meetings.

Purpose

To encourage eligible undergraduate students from underrepresented groups and minorities to present their work, network, and to enable students to take advantage of off-campus professional development opportunities at the Joint Mathematics Meeting and/or MathFest.

Amount

Awards amounts will vary based on expenses incurred during travel to the Joint Mathematics Meeting and/or MathFest. In the past, awards have ranged from $400-$550 per student.

New and returning students are eligible for funding up to the maximum total reimbursement that can be used, in whole or in part, as long as the student and the activities meet the eligibility requirements.

Am I eligible for funding?

You are eligible for funding if you are

  • An undergraduate student, a high school student enrolled in college courses, or a first-year graduate student presenting research done as an undergraduate; and

  • You are presenting at the Joint Mathematics Meeting in the MAA Student Poster Session, the AMS-MAA-SIAM Special Session on Research in Mathematics by Undergraduates and Students in Post-Baccalaureate Programs or the MathFest MAA Student Paper Sessions.
