Professional Development

Best Practices Statements

The MAA Committee on Faculty and Departments have prepared "Best Practices" statements as a sequence of focused documents that faculty and others interested can share easily with administrators.

CoMInDS

The College Mathematics Instructor Development Source (CoMInDS) program (NSF DUE 1432381) equips faculty with necessary information and materials to start or enhance their institution's mathematics graduate student professional development program. MAA Travel Grants for Project ACCCESS

Current Project ACCCESS Fellows are now eligible to submit a request for travel reimbursement for travel (and related expenses) to MAA MathFest OR an MAA Section Meeting. Reimbursement for MAA MathFest may be up to $1000 in eligible expenses, and reimbursement to an MAA Section Meeting may be up to $500 in eligible expenses.

OPEN Math

OPEN Math (NSF DUE 2111260) aims to serve the national interest to advance implementation and understanding of effective practices in delivering online teaching- and learning-focused professional development to undergraduate mathematics educators. Current models for effective professional development often are expensive and restrictive regarding who can participate, largely because they require travel and other support that is neither universally available to individuals nor sustainable in the long term by institutions and individuals, thus limiting the potential impact. To this end, the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the University of Colorado Boulder (CU-B) will implement and study a new online teaching- and learning-focused professional development program which will reach higher education professionals, including those who have been less able to travel due to various constraints.

PIC Math

PIC Math (NSF DMS 1722275) prepares mathematical sciences students for industrial careers by engaging them in research problems that come directly from industry. The program aims to increase awareness among math faculty and undergraduates about career options, teach faculty how to make industry connections in order to provide research experiences for their students to work on real problems coming directly from business, industry, or government, and prepares students for industrial careers.

Project NExT

Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. This program addresses all aspects of an academic career and provides its participants with a network of peers and mentors as they assume these responsibilities.

StatPREP

StatPREP (NSF DUE 1626337) is a partnership program of the MAA, AMATYC, and ASA focused on the use of data-centered methods and pedagogies in introductory statistics courses. This program works directly with college-level instructors, both online and in community workshops, to develop the understanding and skills needed to work and teach with modern data which will enhance the preparation of students to meet the demands of a data-driven workplace. Learn more about StatPREP summer workshops here.

SUMMIT-P

SUMMIT-P is a NSF funded program for synergistic undergraduate mathematics education. A consortium of eleven institutions are collaborating to revise and improve the curriculum for lower division undergraduate mathematics courses. For more information on this program, please visit the SUMMIT-P Website.
