“The Growing Importance of Linear Algebra in Undergraduate Mathematics”, The College Mathematics Journal, Vol. 24, No. 1 (Jan., 1993), pp. 3-9

This is the lead article in the CMJ's Special Issue on Linear Algebra (January 1993). After a brief overview of a few "modern" uses of application, the primary content is a nice summary of the history of linear algebra. Nicely written, and accessible by a wide range of readers (including students).

Very nice overview of modern (as of 1993) applications of linear algebra and the history of linear algebra, and the role of linear algebra in the undergraduate curriculum. I will include this article in my additional readings the next time I teach linear algebra. I think this article could also be appropriate as the basis for a student project in, for example, a capstone course.
