About the Author

Lynn Steen wrote this article in his capacity as a member of the Centennial History subcommittee of the MAA’s Centennial Planning Committee. Because of his long-time membership in CUPM, he had access to most of the documents produced by the committee over many years. He was also a former president of the MAA, who was scheduled to speak in the Presidential Reminiscences session at the Centennial MathFest in Washington, but tragically died in June, less than two months before the meeting. Among his many honors, he won the MAA’s Lester R. Ford Award for expository papers twice as well as the MAA’s Gung and Hu Distinguished Service to Mathematics Award in 1992. He also was recently selected as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. Although he had retired from St. Olaf College in 2009, he remained active in the MAA for the remainder of his life.
