About the Author: (from Mathematics Magazine, Vol. 59 (1986)) Israel Kleiner received his Ph.D. in ring theory under J. Lambek at McGill University and is retired from York University. He has been involved in preservice and in-service teacher education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, among other things. One of his major interests has been in the history of mathematics and its uses in the teaching of mathematics.
