James E. White

It is with great sadness that we announce that Jim White died suddenly and unexpectedly on July 18, 2004, when this paper was in final stages of editing. At the time of his death, Jim lived in Beaufort, NC, and he was Director of The New Mathwright Library and Cafe and President of Bluejay Lispware. He was also the Principal Investigator for Project Welcome at MAA and the primary developer of Mathwright, the system on which the Welcome materials were constructed.

Jim was a personal friend of and collaborator with many in the collegiate mathematics education community -- we will miss his warm smile, calm demeanor, and, above all, his insightful contributions.
