USA Team Competitions: IMO, EGMO, RMM

Students who perform exceptionally well on the AMC 10/12 are invited to continue participating in the AMC series of examinations that culminate with the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The first in this series is the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME), followed by the USA Mathematical Olympiad and Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO and USAJMO). The top participants from the USA(J)MO are invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Program in the summer after the competition. Participants from the Mathematical Olympiad Program are then eligible to be selected for the following summer’s six-member team that will represent the United States of America at the IMO.

About The Olympiads:

The Olympiads distill the robust problem-solving and critical thinking components required later for research while identifying young talent for further enrichment. The Olympiads elevate the level of mathematical awareness globally; these competitions have provided a concrete target for interested young mathematicians to pursue.

These competitions challenge students to concentrate for an extended period of time on a handful of difficult problems, each of which usually requires a great deal of creativity to invent a solution. This is indeed an approximation of the research process. The learning process is greatly enhanced by bringing the students and coaches together at a common location to learn from each other with rigorous feedback.

IMO

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition held annually for high school students. The IMO brings together the top mathematics students from across the world to stimulate and encourage mathematical excellence through competition. This two-day competition consists of three problems to be solved within a 4.5-hour window each day. Each year the U.S. team, organized by the MAA AMC, selects six students to compete; in 2020, over 600 students from 105 countries and territories participated. Read more about the IMO team here.

EGMO

The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) is a challenging high school competition hosted annually to uplift girls across the world and acknowledge them on an international stage. Each year, the US Team consists of four high school girls who solve three rigorous problems over two days. During the course of the competition, the US Team connects with other international teams and mathematicians in competitions and excursions. In 2020, over 50 countries competed in the competition with 204 student participants. The MAA AMC organizes the US Team each year to compete in the EGMO. Read more about the EGMO team here.

RMM

The Romanian Master in Mathematics (RMM) is a challenging international high school mathematics competition that allows students to exchange mathematical ideas and engage in cross-cultural communication with other students from around the world. It is held annually in Bucharest, Romania over the course of two days. Students work through six problems and receive a team score based on the highest three individual scores. The MAA AMC organizes the US Team each year to compete in the RMM. Read more about the RMM team here.
