Almost at Hand: Algorithm-Based Warning Device for Those at High Risk of Heart Attacks

A March 2011 Discoveries and Breakthroughs in Science video looks at the AngelMed Guardian heart attack warning system: a prototype pacemaker-like device that uses a proprietary algorithm to monitor the heart's function. When the system detects a heart problem, a pager flashes and beeps and the device vibrates within the patient's chest.
Looking for changes associated with decreased blood flow to the heart, the device "provides that reassurance to the patient that either everything is ok, or something is wrong and you need to seek help," said Andrew Kaplan, an electrophysiologist at Banner Heart Hospital, in Mesa, Arizona.
Banner Heart Hospital is one of 50 sites taking part in clinical trials. Some 1,000 heart patients around the U.S will soon get the chance to use the new warning system. Once it's proven its worth, the device could revolutionize the treatment and care of those with coronary artery disease.
