Debut International Conference of Women Mathematicians Will Precede ICM 2010

July 29, 2010

The first International Conference of Women Mathematicians (ICWM 2010) will take place immediately preceding the 2010 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2010).

According to ICWM's official website, "The meeting is aimed principally at women mathematicians attending ICM 2010, and in particular at young women mathematicians and women from Asia and from developing countries."

The ICMW will include talks, lectures, and panel discussions. One panel discussion titled "Women Mathematicians Around the World" (on August 17), coordinated by Beatrice Pelloni (University of Reading), will focus on problems and challenges facing women mathematicians.

ICWM 2010 is being organized by the European Women in Mathematics, the European Mathematical Society, and the Association for Women in Mathematics. Financial support is being provided by the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) and Schlumberger.

This year's ICM and ICWM will take place at the University of Hyderabad, India, August 19-27. This the first time the Congress is being held in India. Indian President Pratibha Patil will inaugurate the event.

Around 3,000 delegates from across the globe are expected at the ICM, which represents the biggest and the most prestigious international gathering of mathematicians. MAA’s Director of Publications and Communications, Ivars Peterson, (aka The Mathematical Tourist) will also be in attendance and speaking on a panel about communicating mathematics to society-at-large.
