Federal Study Identifies Best Early-Grade Math Programs

October 5, 2010

The Department of Education has singled out the best commercial curricula for teaching elementary school mathematics.

In a report titled “Achievement Effects of Four Early Elementary School Math Curricula: Findings for First and Second Graders,” the department said that, among first-graders, mathematics achievement was higher with Math Expressions than with Investigations in Number, Data, and Space and Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley (SFAW) Mathematics. The average-performing student’s percentile rank rose by five points.

Among second-grade students, the department reported that achievement was significantly higher with Math Expressions and Saxon Math than with SFAW. The average-performing student’s percentile rank rose 5-7 points.

In addition, Math Expressions and Saxon Math, which makes use of repetition and basic math facts, improved results for poverty-level students.

Teachers in randomly assigned schools in four states used the curriculum throughout the school year.

“These findings suggest that educators should choose their elementary math curriculum wisely,” said Roberto Agodini, associate director at Mathematica, who served as the study’s director and principal investigator.

A final report is slated to be released in summer 2011.
