Rhonda Hughes Honored with AWM's First M. Gweneth Humphreys Award at 2011 JMM

The Association for Women in Mathematics has given its first M. Gweneth Humphreys Award to Rhonda J. Hughes, who is the Helen Herrmann Professor of Mathematics at Bryn Mawr College.

The award recognized Hughes for her "prodigious achievements and unwavering efforts over decades in the mentoring of undergraduate women in mathematics, in particular in attracting them into the study of mathematics and in guiding them through crucial transitions in their mathematical careers."

Hughes served as AWM President in 1987-88. In 1998, she and mathematician Sylvia Bozeman (Spelman College) created the EDGE program, which addresses students' transitions from college to graduate school.

The AWM award is named for M. Gweneth Humphreys (1911-2006), who, in a 30-year career at Randolph Macon Woman's College, guided innumerable undergraduates in the study of mathematics.

Hughes received the award at the Joint Prize Session at the 2011 Joint Mathematics Meetings in New Orleans.
