Three USAMO Winners Receive Akamai Scholarships

The Akamai Foundation awarded scholarships to the top three scorers in this year's USAMO competition. The winners had been honored in early June at the 38th annual USAMO Awards Ceremony and Dinner, in Washington, D.C. MAA President David Bressoud presided over the awards ceremony at the U.S. Department of State, where he introduced the team and presented USAMO medals.

Wenyu Cao of Andover, Mass. received $20,000 for first place while Toan Phan of Watertown, Conn. earned $15,000 for second place and Qinxuan Pan of Rockville, Md. garnered $10,000 for third place.

"Math innovation has always been, and continues to be, at the heart of our mission," said Tom Leighton, Akamai's chief scientist. "We congratulate these winners, as well as all of the participants in this year's competition, on their pursuit of achieving excellence in mathematics."

MAA Executive Director Tina Straley, said, "We are most appreciative of the Akamai Foundation's willingness to devote significant support to this important event. We are striving to make our country's success in mathematics, and the public's interest, rise to the highest levels in the world. This vital support will help us to increase the awareness and success of U.S. math students."

The Akamai Foundation, which has supported the USAMO for many years, is also a sponsor of the U.S. China Girls Mathematical Olympiad teams which will compete later this year.
