U.S. Census Reports Number of Mathematics/Computer Jobs Remained Constant from 2008-2009

October 1, 2010

U.S. Census Bureau figures indicated that 3.472 million people held mathematics and computer related jobs last year, compared to 3.475 million people in 2008.

That's despite the fact that employment dropped by almost 6 million people from 2008 to 2009. The reason for the steadiness in numbers may be because 1/3 of population with at least a bachelor's degree had majored in the STEM fields, according to the Census Bureau.

Colorado showed the largest increase in technology-related employment from 2008-2009: it was up 2.2%. North Carolina and Kentucky were up 1.8% each.

Among states where the change in technology-related employment was at least twice the margin of error, New Hampshire reported the largest decline: down 2.8%. It was followed by Tennessee and Washington, D.C., which were at -2.7%.
