Nominations for the National Science Foundation Director's Awards for
Distinguished Teaching Scholars Are Solicited
The purpose of the DTS
Program is to recognize and reward individuals who are both meritorious
scholars and exemplary teachers as evidenced by their ability to integrate
their research and educational activities and to approach research and
education in a scholarly manner. The specific requirements of the program
are provided in the NSF solicitation:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?nsf04594
The program recognizes and supports the continued and expanded efforts of
individuals with a history of substantial impact on: (a) research in one
or more of the science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM)
disciplines; (b) the education of K-16 STEM students who have diverse
interests and aspirations, including both future K-12 science/math
teachers and students who plan to pursue STEM careers; (c) the STEM
education of students who need to understand mathematics and science as
citizens n a society increasingly dependent on technology and science.
Relative to the selection process, it will be conducted in two steps. In
step one, candidates are nominated by presidents, chief academic officers
or independent off campus researchers. Based on the letter of nomination
and letters of recommendation, a subset of the nominees will be selected
to submit proposals for projects to support their continued activities.
Considering both the original nominating materials and the proposals, six
to eight individuals will be selected as DTS Awardees. The awardees will
be recognized at formal ceremonies in Washington, DC, in June of 2005.
The deadline for the optional letter of intent is September 22, 2004. The
closing date for nominations is October 20, 2004.
