Position open at the National Science
Foundation
Director, Division of Undergraduate Education
NSF's Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) invites nominations
and applications for the position of Director, Division of Undergraduate
Education (DUE). The mission of the Division of Undergraduate Education is
to promote excellence in undergraduate science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics education for all students. The programs of DUE provide funding
support to improve undergraduate education in the full spectrum of institutions,
including community colleges, liberal arts and baccalaureate colleges, comprehensive
universities, and doctoral and research universities. DUE's staff of scientists,
mathematicians, and engineers maintains strong links to their particular
disciplines and professional societies, their counterparts in other
NSF directorates, and the other units in EHR. Collaborative grant activities
are frequently undertaken.
The Division Director is a member of the EHR senior management and
has responsibility for leadership of the Division, for coordination
and cooperation with other Divisions within the EHR, and with
other Divisions of NSF. The Division Director assesses needs and trends
in research and education related to the Division's programs, implements
overall strategic planning and policy setting, provides leadership
and guidance to Division staff members, determines funding requirements,
prepares and justifies budget estimates, balances program needs, allocates
resources, oversees the evaluation of proposals and recommendations
for awards and declinations, represents NSF to relevant external groups,
and fosters partnerships with other Federal agencies, scientific organizations
and the scientific community.
The Division has a staff of about 40 and an annual grant budget of about
$142 million. DUE is responsible for leadership in undergraduate
education at NSF, for administering 11 grantprograms, and for planning and
leadership activities involving the science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics communities throughout the United States. More information
about the Division and its programs may be found at
http://www.ehr.nsf.gov/EHR/DUE/default.asp.
The position requires an earned doctorate or equivalent experience in one
of the science, engineering, or mathematics disciplines, with both
faculty and administrative experience. Candidates are expected to have
a broad view of undergraduate education in the United States and demonstrated
leadership ability.
The position will be filled as a two-year assignment under the Intergovernmental
Personnel Act, with the possibility of a two-year renewal. Individuals
eligible for an IPA assignment with a Federal agency include employees of
institutions of higher education, State and local government agencies or,
Indian tribal governments, and other eligible organizations in instances
where such assignments would be of mutual benefit to the organizations involved.
The individual remains an employee of the home institution and cost-sharing
arrangements are generally negotiated between NSF and the home institution.
For details, see

The formal consideration process will begin in late April 2003. Inquiries,
applications (including vita and letter referencing qualifications), and
nominations for the above positions should be directed to
