MAA Officers' Election

The election for MAA officers concluded on May 31, 2007. The new officers will assume their positions at the conclusion of the Joint Mathematics Meetings in 2008.

President-Elect: David M. Bressoud, Macalester College, President-Elect 2008, President 2009–2010, Past-President, 2011

First Vice President: Elizabeth Mayfield, Hood College, 2008–2009

Second Vice President: Daniel J. Teague, North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, 2008–2009

U.S.A. Mathematical Olympiad: Spelling Champ Also Math Whiz

Evan M. O'Dorney, 13, who on May 31 won this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee, will shortly be spending time doing what he really likes: mathematics at the MAA-sponsored Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP). O'Dorney will be one of the youngest participants ever at the MOSP.

AIM Groundbreaking: Building a Castle for Math

On a bright, sunny day, dignitaries broke ground for the new American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) center in Morgan Hill, Calif. Local leaders and members of the area's mathematics community, including Congressman Jerry McNerney, met yesterday afternoon at the site to mark the official beginning of the much-anticipated project, which is scheduled to be finished in late 2009.

Srinivasa S. R. Varadhan to Receive 2007 Abel Prize

Srinivasa S. R. Varadhan, of New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, has been awarded the 2007 Abel Prize in mathematics by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Prof. Varadhan will receive the Abel Prize from King Harald V of Norway, in Oslo, on May 22. The honor is accompanied by a prize of approximately $920,000.

2007 IMO Team Selected

On May 22-23, the twelve 2007 USAMO winners took the rigorous team selection test to try to qualify for the U.S. team, which will compete in the International Mathematical Olympiad to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, July 19-30.

The team consists of the following six students:
