This is the second edition of Easttom's Modern Cryptography text. As was the case with the first edition, the text is not meant for undergraduate students in mathematics or computer science so much as programmers, network administrators, and IT specialists looking for a text to bridge the gap between the professional certification preparation books that provide essentially no detail on the cryptography topics they cover and the more "serious" mathematical cryptography texts that tend to be used in undergraduate classes.

The major changes that were made for this edition include the following.

  • There is now a discussion of the YAK cipher in Chapter 10.
  • The discussion of mathematics in Chapter 5 (Essential Algebra) has been expanded.
  • The inclusion of two new chapters on quantum-resistant cryptography algorithms.
Benjamin Linowitz (benjamin.linowitz@oberlin.edu) is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Oberlin College.
