Composition: The Chain Rule

Three adjacent windows display graphs of (1) a function \(f\), a tangent line, and color-coded horizontal and vertical segments for the coordinates of the point of tangency, (2) a function \(g\), a tangent line, and color-coded horizontal and vertical segments for the coordinates of the point of tangency, and (3 ) the composition, a tangent line, and color-coded horizontal and vertical segments for the coordinates of the point of tangency. The functions \(f\) and \(g\) can be freely defined by user or by selecting specific compositions from a drop-down menu. The website, calculusapplets.com, has Java applets for much of single variable calculus.
